RO Water purification system installation in Panamura | CSR

Introduction to this project

On the 28th of June, 2024 , ROKY Holdings handed over another Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification system in Panamura village, located in Walalgoda, Embilipitiya. This initiative was implemented in partnership with the International Lions Society, District 306 A2. The organisation provided generous funding and support, especially by Mr. Lion Shamil Chamika and Mr. Lion Nuwan Bellantudawa. Panamura, like many other regions in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, has long suffered from poor water quality. This causes residents to often relying on sources contaminated by high levels of fluoride and other impurities. We recognised that this was both a public health concern and a barrier to sustainable development. Hence, this project aimed to provide residents with reliable access to safe, purified drinking water, free of charge.

Challenges faced when installing the RO water purification system

One of the main challenges the team encountered was the harsh environmental conditions in Panamura—a region with a high prevalence of CKDu. This is caused by the contamination of groundwater with excessive fluoride and other harmful chemicals. This urgency pushed the team to act fast, while also managing the difficulty of identifying a sustainable and treatable water source. They also had to overcome infrastructural limitations. For example, irregular electricity access and the need to involve the local community in maintaining the system. Despite these challenged, the team successfully tackled these challenges and delivered a reliable, efficient, and community-friendly solution.

The significance of the installation extends beyond just providing clean water. It directly contributes to improving the health, well-being, and daily quality of life for the residents of Panamura. It also alleviates the financial burden many families faced in purchasing bottled water or traveling long distances to access safe water sources.

Summary

On June 28, 2024, the RO water purification system was officially handed over to the Panamura community. This marks the successful completion of a project rooted in compassion, partnership, and practical impact. Within a matter of weeks, the community began accessing safe, clean drinking water—an essential need that had long been unmet. This system solves one of the most pressing concerns in the community. It also reflects the power of collaboration between private and civic organizations. For ROKY Holdings, this project stands as a milestone in our mission to support sustainable, community-focused infrastructure. Through our partnership with the International Lions Society, we are committed to continuing this work and expanding access to clean water to more villages in need.
