RO water purification system in Bandaragama | NGOs

Introduction to the project

On the 15th of September, ROKY Holdings completed the installation of another Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification system. This installation occurred in the Bandaragama village, situated in Alayapaththuwa, Anuradhapura. This initiative was born out of a pressing need. Anuradhapura has consistently reported some of the highest rates of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu) in Sri Lanka. It was highlighted in a 2023 report by Durdans Hospital. With limited access to clean drinking water and high groundwater contamination, the local community faced severe health risks. Hence, this project aimed to provide a reliable source of purified water to the villagers, directly addressing the root of a longstanding public health challenge. The financial support of the Foundation of Goodness made this initiative possible, helping better the quality of life for the rural villagers.

The installation of the RO water purification system

The significance of this installation goes beyond infrastructure; it is a life-saving intervention. Bandaragama village, like many others in the North Central Province, has struggled with limited access to safe drinking water. Most available water sources contain high fluoride and heavy metal content in groundwater sources. This has been directly linked to the alarming rise in CKDu cases, which continue to afflict a large portion of the local population.

One opportunity that helped streamline the project was the presence of an unused cultivation well within the village. Though neglected, it offered a potential water source. The ROKY Holdings team undertook the task of revitalising this asset, cleaning and restoring the well, constructing a new building to house the purification system, and integrating the RO technology to suit local conditions. The logistical and environmental limitations of the area were challenging, due to the remote access and unreliable utilities. Despite everything, the team completed the project within a tight three-week timeframe, ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability.

Summary

In just under a month, ROKY Holdings successfully installed a fully functional RO water purification system near a repurposed well in Bandaragama village. This project not only made use of existing local resources but also introduced vital infrastructure to a community in need. The purified water system will significantly reduce health risks, especially those related to CKDu, and improve the overall quality of life for residents. For ROKY Holdings, this project reinforces the value of sustainable, community-centered development. Through strategic collaboration and purpose-driven implementation, we continue our commitment to making clean water accessible to every corner of Sri Lanka.
