ROKY Holdings launched a community-focused water purification project in the Minipe Pradeshiya Sabha, Hasalaka. This region, situated in Sri Lanka’s Central Province, reports a troubling rise in cases of Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown etiology (CKDu). Research has linked the disease to prolonged use of contaminated drinking water. To address this urgent public health concern, ROKY Holdings installed a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification system.
This project was made possible through close collaboration with international non governmental organizations (INGOs) focused on health and sustainability. Together, they aimed to deliver a long-term, low-maintenance solution for safe drinking water. The installation directly supports the needs of the Hasalaka community, ensuring access to clean water and a safer future.
Many residents in Hasalaka rely on groundwater that may contain harmful substances, including heavy metals and pesticides. Although invisible, these contaminants have a devastating impact on long-term health, contributing to the area’s high CKDu rates. The need for immediate, preventive action became increasingly clear.
Despite minor logistical delays and challenging terrain, the project team remained focused on delivering a reliable solution. Regular input from local authorities helped the team identify the best location for installation. In the end, the importance of the work outweighed every difficulty.
The team successfully installed the RO water purification system within four weeks. It now delivers clean, safe water to hundreds of residents daily. By removing dangerous toxins and heavy metals, the system directly reduces the community’s risk of developing CKDu.
This project stands as a significant milestone for ROKY Holdings and its partners. It not only addresses a critical health issue but also strengthens trust between organizations and the communities they serve. The team remains committed to expanding such solutions to other at-risk regions.
“Access to clean water should be a right, not privilege.”
