Construction of the retaining wall and bike shelter in the NWSDB office Bandarawela

Introduction to this project

ROKY Holdings (Pvt) Ltd proudly partnered with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) for the construction of a retaining wall and bike shelter at the Bandarawela Provincial Office. Located in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Bandarawela experiences frequent rainfall and terrain instability. These conditions create challenges for public offices operating in exposed and elevated environments. Both installations of this project were designed to improve site safety, encourage sustainable transportation, and ensure long-term structural resilience. Funded through internal NWSDB allocations and managed jointly by both organizations, the project showcases effective collaboration between the public and private sectors. Above all, it addresses a growing need for disaster-resistant infrastructure in high-risk regions.

Challenges faced during construction of the retaining wall and bike shelter

Bandarawela’s geography posed immediate engineering challenges. The sloped terrain required meticulous excavation and ground preparation before construction could begin. Sudden weather shifts often interrupted progress, forcing the team to adjust work schedules to maintain safety and quality. Additionally, engineers had to account for water flow management to avoid future erosion beneath the structure. Despite these challenges, the project brought essential value to the community and the staff working on site. The bike shelter, completed in less than two weeks, provided a practical and eco-conscious facility. It protects bicycles from rain, promotes non-motorized transport, and improves daily convenience for employees and visitors. Its presence also encourages a greener office culture within NWSDB.

Meanwhile, the retaining wall represented the core of the installation’s safety mission. Built using high-grade materials and under constant expert supervision, the wall supports the office premises against landslides and soil pressure. Engineers integrated a drainage system into its design, ensuring long-term stability and reducing future maintenance needs. This preventive measure not only safeguards lives and assets but also reflects a broader commitment to disaster resilience in public infrastructure planning.

Summary

The Bandarawela NWSDB Office project delivered two key results: a sturdy retaining wall and a practical bike shelter. The shelter provides secure, weatherproof parking for staff, promoting eco-friendly travel. The retaining wall protects the site from landslides while fitting seamlessly with the landscape. Construction finished on schedule and met high-quality standards. ROKY Holdings and NWSDB engineers worked closely throughout. This project confirms our belief that infrastructure must serve communities today and tomorrow, with safety and lasting impact.
