We, at ROKY Holdings are proud to announce the completed installation of advanced water filtration systems. It serves as an effort to ensure safe, accessible drinking water for schoolchildren in Sri Lanka’s arid Northern Province. We installed four of these systems in four key educational institutions in the Mannar District; St. Xavier’s Boys College, St. Sithivinayagar Hindu College, St. Fathima Maha Vidyalayam, and Vep. This community-focused project was initiated in response to the urgent health. It addresses concerns arising from Mannar’s hot climate, where dehydration and waterborne illnesses pose a significant risk to students.
This project was commissioned through a successful tender awarded by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB). The financially support was provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project aimed to provide a long-term solution to a critical public health need. The core objective was to deliver clean, filtered drinking water directly within school premises, safeguarding the well-being of both students and staff.
Mannar District’s intense heat and limited access to safe drinking water create a harsh environment for young learners. With temperatures frequently soaring, dehydration and related illnesses are common. These impact not just student health, but also school attendance and academic performance. Many students previously relied on unsafe or limited water sources, exacerbating the issue. Recognizing the vital link between hydration, cognitive performance, and physical well-being, this project became more than an infrastructure upgrade, it was a health and education intervention. By ensuring continuous access to clean water, the filtration systems are now a frontline defense against disease and dropout rates. The project also highlighted the long-term developmental value of investing in school-based infrastructure, especially in underserved regions.
After six months of coordinated planning, procurement, and on-site installation, four advanced water filtration systems were successfully implemented across the four schools in Mannar District. The systems now provide hundreds of students and staff with daily access to clean, safe drinking water. It addresses a fundamental health need and promoting better attendance and learning outcomes. This project reinforces ROKY Holdings’ commitment to sustainable, community-centered solutions and sets a benchmark for school-based infrastructure development in Sri Lanka’s rural regions.
“Access to clean water should not be a privilege, but a right.”
