The Wew Gam Pubuduwa Initiative, led by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), focused on improving water infrastructure in rural Sri Lanka by installing advanced water treatment systems. The project specifically targeted underserved areas in the Kurunegala District. It aimed to provide clean and safe drinking water to key community institutions such as schools and hospitals. These included Anamaduwa Paliyagama Shariputra Maha Vidyalaya, Navagathegama Rural Hospital, Bandaranayakapura Maha Vidyalaya, Vijayapura Junior College, and Vanathavilluwa. Many of these institutions faced challenges like water shortages, poor sanitation, and outdated infrastructure. By addressing these issues, the project sought to improve health, hygiene, and education outcomes in the region. The initiative also partnered with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB).

The project team had to navigate logistical difficulties in reaching remote locations and upgrading outdated infrastructure. However, the importance of the installation went beyond infrastructure improvement. It played a critical role in promoting better hygiene, reducing illness-related absences in schools, and ensuring safer hospital environments. Furthermore, the project reduced the community’s financial burden caused by medical treatments and infrastructure repairs linked to unsafe water.
